On May 19, 2005 Europe Day celebration will take place in Odessa.
Europe Day was officially accepted at the Milano summit of European Union in 1985. State leaders of the EU agreed to celebrate this day on 9th of May as on this exact date in 1950 French Minister of Foreign Affairs Robert Shuman gave a statement for the press about the creation of “strong background for European Federation”. Since 2003 Europe Day has been celebrated in Kyiv.
In Odessa informational fair and scientific conference “Role of Youth in Solving the Problems of Ukraine’s Accession to the EU” are planned for this day. Concert of actors from different countries is likely to take place at the Theatre Square in front of the Opera and Ballet Theatre.
Naturally, much attention will be paid to the relationships between Ukraine and European Union. Round table on that issue will be held and the Head of Representative Office of European Commission in Ukraine has been invited to participate in it.
To celebrate Europe Day in Odessa representatives of different diplomatic missions, ambassadors and other foreign guests are expected to arrive. Latter contract has been arranged with the embassies of Belgium, the United Kingdom, Austria, Slovakia and the Netherlands. Representatives of Cabinet of Ministers and Ministry of Foreign Affairs are also expected.
The first vice-governor A. Yatsenuk said that 10 big-boards and city-lights will be placed at the central streets of Odessa. To let people know about Europe Day, the region will be provided by EU flags and other informational production.
